How to Choose the Best Category for Your Google Business Profile

Are you a business owner who wants to improve your online presence?

One key factor in improving your visibility on Google Maps and Search is picking the right category for your Google Business Profile. Since Google Business Profile categories change often, this is sometimes a source of confusion for local business owners.

To figure out which categories to use on your listing, we suggest using some tools that can help you find the most relevant categories for your business.

The first tool we use is the Pleper Chrome extension.  To see this tool in action, make sure you install it and then go to Google Maps and search for the keyword you want to rank for.

For example, if you own a moving company in Tucson, AZ, search for “movers in Tucson.”

Look at the categories that populate based on the ranking listings. These categories are the ones that Google associates with businesses in that industry and location.

GMB Everywhere is another useful tool that allows you easily see all the categories a listing is using when you view it on Google Maps.  This will help you see categories your competitors are using that you might not have thought of.

The Pleper Category Tool works similarly to the Chrome extension.  It allows you to enter your business information along with the keyword you want to rank for and will show you the most commonly used categories based on other similar business listings.
