The Smart Way to Expand in a Large City Without Hurting SEO

Expanding your business to a new location? Optimizing for one location is simple, but things get tricky when you open multiple locations in the same city. Here’s how we helped a home service business dominate an entire market without tanking their existing rankings.

The Challenge: Ranking Two Locations in One City

Our client had a well-established office in Charlotte. When they opened a second location—far from the first—we ran into a problem.

  • If you create a second Charlotte page, Google likely won’t rank it. Google avoids ranking near-identical pages from the same website.
  • The main office was strong—lots of history and reviews—so it ranked well in many areas.
  • The new office, however, ranked poorly in its part of the city.

  • Worse, the main office didn’t rank well there either.

But the new office ranked crappy there as well.

The Solution: One Page, Two Locations

Instead of creating a separate page for North Charlotte, we merged the two locations onto a single Charlotte page.

  • The page now listed both locations under one city-wide service page.
  • Each location kept its own unique address and phone number on Google Business Profile.
  • Both listings linked to the same page, but Google did not flag them as duplicates or suspend them.

The Result: A Massive Organic Ranking Boost

Once we consolidated the pages, something incredible happened:

📈 Their organic rankings exploded! They started ranking all over their new market for their primary keyword.

The Takeaway

If you’re opening a second location in the same city, don’t create a new page. Instead, add the second location to your existing location page.
