The Shocking Truth About Local SEO Costs

So you think SEO is expensive?

You’re not wrong.

I’m going to break down exactly where your money goes when you hire a local SEO agency. Real numbers and examples from my own agency.

Employee Costs

Let’s start with the obvious: humans.

An SEO analyst with a bit of experience averages around $75,000 per year in salary, according to SEOJobs.com.

But if you’re thinking “okay, 75K, not bad,” just remember you’ve also got healthcare, vacation time, bonuses, a workspace, and tech (laptops, software licenses, and ergonomic chairs that cost more than your monthly grocery bill). And then someone has to manage that analyst. Which means… more salaries.

It adds up fast.

To make this less overwhelming, we created a free tool to help you estimate some of these costs. You can find it here:  SEO Cost Calculator

Tools (The “Invisible” Budget Sucker)

SEO without tools is like trying to do surgery with a spoon. Possible? Maybe. Smart? Not at all.

At Sterling Sky, we spend around $93,000 a year just on tools. And that’s not even high compared to some people I’ve talked to.

Here’s a peek at just some of the platforms we use:

  • Asana: $762/month → $9,144/year
  • Slack: $3,500/year
  • Ahrefs: $4,500/year
  • FreshBooks: $146/month + 3% on all credit card transactions
  • Google Workspace: $600/month → $7,200/year
  • Mailchimp: $282/month → $3,384/year

These tools aren’t optional; they’re essential. We use them to stay organized, communicate, run audits, bill clients, run campaigns, and collaborate efficiently.

Sure, they’re expensive. But they’re also a big part of why we’re good at what we do.

Education & Constant Testing

SEO isn’t something you learn once and master forever. It changes all the time (thank you, Google).

To stay ahead, our team is constantly running tests. As of right now, we have 113 test items open. Last year alone, we spent over 400 hours on testing.

That’s about $14,400 in labor just to stay current.

We’ve also run over 1,000 tests in the last year, attended conferences, and, fun fact: We even own the LocalU conference series. Yes, we’re that serious about staying ahead.

One conference event can cost between $3,000 to $5,000. But the real cost of not staying educated? Your rankings. Your visibility. Your traffic.

Final Thoughts

SEO costs a lot because good SEO is a lot. It’s strategy, testing, content, tools, project management, and ongoing education.

You’re not just paying for tasks, you’re paying for expertise that’s current, safe, and proven to work.

And just because someone offers SEO services for $300 a month, it doesn’t mean they’re a steal. It usually means you’re getting fake traffic, shady backlinks, or just nothing of value at all.

So when people ask, “Why is SEO so expensive?” remember you’re paying for the real thing. And trust me, the real thing is worth it.
