Why Can’t I Write a Google Review?

TLDR

If you can’t write a Google review, there could be several reasons behind it. You might not see the option because:

  • The business has a review block due to spam or other issues.
  • The business category does not accept reviews (e.g., schools).
  • The country you’re in restricts Google reviews.
  • The review option may only appear on certain Google platforms (like Google Maps vs. Google Search).
  • Google’s automated systems may filter or block your review.
  • The review feature might be removed due to inconsistent or unexplained issues.

For more details, check the full list of reasons below.

Why Can’t I Write a Google Review?

Are you wondering why you can’t see the option to write a review on Google? This is more common than you might think. Below are some of the possible reasons why you may be unable to leave a review.

1. Review Block on the Business Listing

Sometimes, Google removes the “write a review” option from certain business listings. This could happen due to an issue like spam attacks or other types of misuse. The business may be temporarily or permanently blocked from receiving reviews.

2. Business Category Does Not Accept Reviews

Certain categories, such as schools and educational institutions, are not allowed to receive Google reviews. In these cases, the review option will simply not appear.

3. Abuse or Spam Protections Triggered Review Removal

If a business listing is targeted by spam or fake reviews, Google may temporarily disable the option to leave a review to protect the integrity of the review system.

4. Country-Specific Restrictions on Reviews

In some countries, Google has restrictions that prevent users from leaving reviews for certain businesses. If you are in one of these countries or are trying to review a business in a restricted area, you may not see the option to write a review.

5. The Option Is Present on One Platform but Not Another

The “write a review” button might only appear on Google Maps and not on Google Search, or vice versa. This inconsistency can lead to confusion when trying to leave a review.

6. Google’s Automated Review Filtering

Sometimes, even after you submit a review, Google’s automated systems might filter it out. This could happen if Google detects suspicious patterns, such as reviews coming from a business’s own network or users who are too far away geographically.

7. Random Inconsistent Issues

In rare cases, Google may disable the review option for a business for reasons that aren’t immediately clear. These issues can be inconsistent and not tied to any specific cause.

We have also seen a few cases of random businesses that have lost the ‘write a review’ feature. At this point, we can’t decipher what prompts Google to remove this feature or how to enable it.

Summary of Reasons

Reason # Explanation
1 Business has a review block due to abuse or policy decisions
2 Business category does not accept reviews (e.g., schools)
3 Spam or review attacks triggered protection
4 Restricted reviews in certain countries
5 Option visible only in some Google platforms (Search vs Maps)
6 Review filtered by Google’s automated systems
7 Inconsistent or unexplained review option removal

  1. I see reviews from some people not showing up on GMBs. It is not across the board though and only on some profiles it is invisible to everyone else besides the person that created the review. It still shows for them.

    1. Hey Rachel,

These examples are different than what’s going on for COVID-19. Google paused review functionality in March on all listings but you could still leave a review and the review button was still on the listing. Google says they plan on publishing those reviews later (that were left in the last few weeks). In these cases, there is no ability to leave a review on the listing at all and it’s due to spam blocks and not COVID-19.

  3. I think my email may have been blocked from leaving reviews due to one bad review I left for a business. I can’t leave reviews on any business now.

  5. Is this isolated to listings viewed in Google Search only, or would this reasoning affect the listing in both Search and Maps? I have a case where there’s no option to leave a review in Search, but the option is there in Maps and does allow for a review to be left. I’m perplexed!

    1. Are you seeing this trend on businesses in a specific vertical? Please share an example and I’d be happy to take a look.
